The Team functions to coordinate and to provide multidisciplinary specialty care for children with congenital defects of the head and neck or acquired defects secondary to trauma and/or oncology. Examples of these disorders include: cleft lip, cleft palate, cranial and facial asymmetry, craniosynostosis, microtia, nasal and jaw deformities, other oral and facial asymmetry and facial abnormalities, as well as speech disorders associated with hypernasality and/or velopharyngeal incompetence. The Team’s newborn outreach program will see the parents and affected infant in the birthing hospital within 24 hours after birth for diagnosis, feeding assistance, and family support. We also provide pre-natal instruction, counseling, and support to families when it is determined via ultrasound that they have an infant developing with a cleft lip and/or palate. Follow up, genetic counseling and specialty care is coordinated through the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Craniofacial Team throughout childhood, while primary care is maintained in the local community.
