The Department of Radiology at Connecticut Children's Medical Center is specifically set up for imaging of infants and children. The MR unit is a state of the art 1.5T scanner. There is collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia to provide sedation for any child who requires it for these lengthy studies. CT is provided with a multi-channel scanner using ALARA and "Image Gently" principles to keep radiation doses as low as possible. The ultrasound service is very busy as this is an imaging modality well suited to children since there is no ionizing radiation and small body size allows for excellent visualization. We run several ultrasound units all set up specifically for imaging children. Fluoroscopy is provided with two digital fluoroscopy machines, one with pulsed fluoro to reduce radiation dose even further. General imaging is performed on several CR (Computed Radiography) units. All modalities are digital and images are stored in a PACS system and are therefore available for viewing by referring physicians from any computer. The department is supported by a sedation service which provides sedation when necessary for more difficult procedures. There is also support by the Child Life Department to help children through their procedures. Nuclear Medicine studies are provided through an agreement with Hartford Hospital.
