Dr. Connors’ passion for pediatric procedural sedation and analgesia has been the result of a combination of personal and professional experiences. First, Dr. Connors’ interest in medicine came from his mother’s recollection of his brother’s suffering through treatment during a failed battle with Wilms’ tumor. Dr. Connors’ clinical training furthered his interest in relieving anxiety and pain which led to his early career in the emergency department. He enjoyed the emergency department, but also felt somewhat limited in his understanding of how best to approach patients undergoing painful or diagnostic tests. When the opportunity arose, he began a private practice dedicated to sedation and analgesia and spent the last ten years in Knoxville, Tennessee, caring for thousands of children undergoing tests and procedures. Dr. Connors witnessed the impact on quality and value that a dedicated sedation service can provide and therefore sought an opportunity to research and demonstrate these impacts on a broader scale. When Connecticut Children’s called, he took the opportunity to join an institution with the resources, expertise and shared passion to develop, research and disseminate the best approaches to caring for children undergoing tests and procedures.
