Cochlear Implant Team
Children with congenital or acquired hearing loss may be candidates for treatment with a cochlear implant. Our implant surgeons are otolaryngologists who work with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and deaf educators to provide families with a comprehensive evaluation for implant candidacy, surgery and long-term monitoring. For children younger than three, a Birth-to-Three representative is also part of the evaluation process. Device choice, unilateral versus bilateral implantation (the use of one or two cochlear implants), sequential or simultaneous implantation, and age at implantation are considered based on the needs of each child. Connecticut Children’s audiology department offers implant mapping, maintenance, repair, and external device upgrades to make new technology available to long-term cochlear implant users.
