Connecticut Children’s Medical Center is designated as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center that evaluates and treats more than 56,000 children each year. It is one of only two free-standing children’s hospitals in New England—and the only free-standing children’s hospital in Connecticut—able to provide the highest level of emergency care to children suffering from traumatic injuries.

As a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, Connecticut Children’s team of board certified emergency medicine physicians and extensively trained staff provide experienced multidisciplinary treatment with specialized resources to meet the unique needs of infants, children and adolescents. In Connecticut Children’s 29-bed emergency department, comprehensive medical services are available to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including:

  • Abdominal or other serious conditions
  • Brain and head injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Burns
  • Infections
  • Poisoning
  • Psychiatric illness including shock and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Severe asthma and other respiratory conditions
  • Sudden illnesses
  • Suspected child or sexual abuse
  • Trauma

Connecticut Children’s Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center has trauma surgeons available 24/7, including those trained in specialties such as neurosurgery and orthopaedic surgery, along with highly sophisticated medical diagnostic equipment.

Minutes matter in the transport of critically ill infants and children, and the care received en route to Connecticut Children’s is essential to ensuring the best possible outcome.

Ground Transport

The Critical Care Transport Team is a highly-trained group of specialists that transports high-risk neonatal and pediatric patients to and from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week

Helicopter Transport

With a helipad on its rooftop, Hartford Hospital’s 24/7 LIFE STAR helicopter transport service brings neonatal and pediatric patients to Connecticut Children’s for immediate access to comprehensive pediatric trauma services

Major referral center

Continuous, 24/7 care from our in-house emergency medical physicians, physicians in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and other sub-specialists allows Connecticut Children’s to admit critically ill or injured pediatric patients from other hospitals across the Northeast when more advanced care is needed. Connecticut Children’s Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center is the busiest facility between Boston and New York.
