Coronavirus Update: Visitor Restrictions and Info

We know that parents and families may have many questions regarding the coronavirus. To ensure there is a trusted one-stop resource, we have launched the Connecticut Children’s Pediatric COVID-19 Hotline.

Connecticut Children’s is committed to the health of our patients, families and communities. Right now, that includes keeping you informed about the current outbreak of coronavirus.

NON-URGENT OUTPATIENT APPOINTMENTS

Connecticut Children’s now offers Video Visits for non-urgent outpatient appointments. Video Visits are available in most specialties. We have suspended in-person visits for non-urgent outpatient appointments until further notice, starting on Monday March 23, 2020. This includes Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition, Audiology, and Speech Therapy services.

We will continue to see patients in person for urgent appointments.

If you are coming to Connecticut Children’s for care, please call your provider about any possible exposure or symptoms prior to your appointment.

VISITOR RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT FOR ALL CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S LOCATIONS

  • Inpatient: Only one parent or legal guardian per day is permitted on inpatient floors. No children are permitted on these floors.
  • Outpatient: A maximum of two parents, legal guardians or designated adults will be allowed per patient, and no children under the age of 12 may accompany the visit.
  • Temperature screening of patients and families is in effect at the first floor entrance to the Medical Center at 282 Washington St., Hartford. Our second floor entrance will be closed until further notice.

If you have questions about COVID-19 and your upcoming appointment, please call your specialty clinic. If you are coming to Connecticut Children’s for care, please call your provider about any possible exposure or symptoms prior to your appointment.

Additionally:

  • We are temporarily stopping all nonessential vendor access, including food delivery, to inpatient rooms.
  • There will be no community access to the United Technologies Family Resource Center.
  • Volunteer programs are suspended.
  • We cannot currently accept toy or handmade donations at our 282 Washington Street location.

These restrictions are an important way for us to prevent the spread of illness, and keep our patients and communities safe from coronavirus, flu and other contagious respiratory illnesses.

Your health is our top priority. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Why aren’t children allowed on inpatient floors, or (if they’re under age 12) to accompany their sibling’s outpatient visit?

Children are much more likely to be carriers of respiratory virus due to their less-than-perfect hygiene practices and close proximity to others who may be sick. Additionally, extended contact with large numbers of other children at school or daycare makes them particularly likely to contract viruses and pass it on to others.

My child is not sick. Why is he/she not allowed to visit?

As the only health system in Connecticut dedicated exclusively to the care of children, we have a special responsibility to keep children healthy. This includes children who are the family members and friends of our patients. Some infections – including flu and respiratory illnesses – can be contagious for a day (or more) before they show symptoms. This means your child may feel and act completely fine, but still spread the illness to others. By restricting children from visiting at this time, we can minimize the risk of infection for your child who is our patient, as well as your other children and family members.

When will the visitation restrictions be lifted?

We closely monitor the prevalence of flu and other respiratory viruses circulating in the community. We will lift visitation restrictions as soon as we safely can.

VISITOR TIPS

How can Connecticut Children’s families and visitors stop the spread of coronavirus?

  • Please do not visit patients if you are feeling sick.
  • When visiting Connecticut Children’s, report any travel in the past 30 days to places outside the United States or to any of the high-risk areas listed at cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers
  • Wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub every time you walk into or out of a patient room.
  • If you are a rooming-in parent who is experiencing any cough, fever, sneezing, vomiting or diarrhea, please make alternate overnight plans. We will look forward to welcoming you back when you are feeling better.
  • If you are a parent or guardian who is sick and already here at Connecticut Children’s, please stay in the patient room, stay out of community spaces such as the family pantries, cafeteria, playroom and gift shop, and wear a mask as you exit the building.
  • Talk to your nurse or physician if you have any questions about preventing coronavirus.

CALLING AHEAD

Do I need to provide any extra information when I call to make an appointment?

Yes. When you call to make an appointment, please let our staff know if your child or a member of your family has

  • Had close contact with someone who was confirmed to have coronavirus.
  • Traveled in the last 30 days to China, Japan, Iran, South Korea, Italy or any of the any of the high-risk areas listed at cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers.
  • Currently has respiratory symptoms including fever, runny nose, or cough.

We will help decide when and where your child should be seen.
