HARTFORD, Conn. – Connecticut Children’s Medical Center is pleased to announce the appointment of James E. Moore. MD, PhD, to Chief of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Connecticut Children’s and Head of the Division of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics at the UCONN School of Medicine.

Dr. Moore earned his Bachelors of Science from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology from Emory University. He completed his medical training at Emory, followed by a residency in Pediatrics at UTSW Medical Center in Dallas and a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at Boston Children’s. Following his training he returned to Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as Assistant Professor in Pediatrics and Director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship. He was subsequently recruited to UT Southwestern in July 2011 as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Director of the NICU at Dallas Children’s.  During his four year tenure in Dallas he spearheaded a remarkable expansion of the NICU, developed a ground breaking regional neonatal telemedicine service and contributed to the growth of the ECMO program.

Dr. Moore’s clinical interests include neonatal ECMO and transfusion medicine and his clinical research interests include hypoxia related neurologic injury of the premature infant and neuroprotective strategies in this same population, and the factors that contribute to the development of necrotizing enterocolitis. Dr. Moore brings a wealth of experience, enthusiasm and academic rigor to Connecticut Children’s and will be responsible for overseeing the continued growth of our clinical services and our educational and research programs in the Division of Neonatology.  He will also foster new strategic alliances with the Maternal Fetal Medicine Programs at Hartford Hospital, UCONN Health and other regional partners.

Upon Dr. Moore’s arrival in August, Dr. Victor Herson, who will be retiring as Chief of the Division of Neonatology, will assume a part time role in the Division and will work closely with Dr. Moore on the further development of regional neonatal services across Connecticut. Dr. Herson will continue to serve in his current role as Chief of Pediatrics at Hartford Hospital.
