At the state level, Connecticut elects six statewide constitutional officers: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, Comptroller, and Secretary of the State. The Connecticut General Assembly includes 36 state senators and 151 state representatives.
When do I vote in state elections?
State representatives and state senators are elected every two years. Connecticut's statewide constitutional officers are elected every four years. In 2026, the statewide constitutional offices and all 187 seats in the Connecticut General Assembly are on the ballot. The general election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Why do state elections matter?
State elected officials make decisions about Connecticut laws, the state budget, and programs that serve children and families. The Governor can also take executive actions within the authority provided by state law.
Keeping Kids Safe and Healthy
Accidents are the number one cause of childhood death. Many laws related to firearm safety, teen driving laws, and pedestrian safety are voted on in the state legislature. If you have ideas for policies that may keep kids safer you should reach out and discuss them with your state legislators.
Supporting Medicaid
At Connecticut Children’s, over half of our patients rely on Medicaid as their health insurer. State regulators determine how much state Medicaid dollars will reimburse providers for care. States also have authority to expand or shrink Medicaid eligibility and to determine the services and procedures Medicaid covers.
Supporting Children's Behavioral Health
Connecticut funds and oversees behavioral health programs for children and adolescents. State policy can affect reimbursement, workforce capacity, crisis services, prevention, and access to community-based care.
Funding Schools, Nonprofits, and Social Services
The state provides funding for education, social services, prevention programs, and nonprofit organizations that serve children and families. The General Assembly and Governor make many of these funding decisions through the state budget.
