Hartford, Conn.- Connecticut Children’s is proud to announce that its orthopedic division is the state’s TOP ranked pediatric orthopedics program in the 2021-2022 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital rankings released today. At Connecticut Children’s, our team of orthopedic specialists achieved the state’s highest ranking thanks to excellent outcomes and exceptional patient care. In addition, the orthopedics team cares for patients at five walk-in and same day clinics across the state, including our newest clinics in Danbury & Shelton and another location coming soon in Westport, making it easier than ever for children and young adults to get the care they need, when they need it.

“One of the things we are most proud of is our innovative approach to orthopedics care and research,” said Jeffrey Thomson, MD, division head of orthopedics at Connecticut Children’s. “We are the only children’s health system in the state with the EOS Imaging System, an ultra low-dose, 3-D imaging system that uses two to three times less radiation than conventional machines while producing high quality, detailed images. We also have a team of innovators who are finding engaging ways educate our parents on a broad range of orthopedic health issues including more effective and less invasive treatments for pediatric orthopedic conditions like scoliosis and concussions. The recognition is certainly an honor, but we don’t do it for the accolades. Our focus and priority are the children of Connecticut and the region.”

Connecticut Children’s orthopedics is the only program in the state certified in the Ponseti method, a manipulative technique that corrects congenital clubfoot without extensive surgery. U.S. News & World Report collects data from nearly 200 children’s hospitals nationwide, taking into consideration clinical outcomes, hospital resources, and delivery of healthcare. This in combination with survey results from pediatric specialists across the country is used to identify the top 50 programs for 10 different specialties.

In addition to its orthopedics ranking, Connecticut Children’s was also ranked in the Top 50 programs nationally by U.S. News & World Report in Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Urology and Neonatology. Connecticut Children’s award-winning neonatal network provides specialized care for babies at 14 neonatal intensive care units and well-baby nurseries across 10 hospitals in two states.

“The recognition from U.S. News & World Report is a testament to our dedicated physicians, nurses and team members who have continued delivering care during the COVID-19 pandemic while striving to advance research and clinical outcomes across the health system,” said Jim Shmerling, DHA, FACHE, President & CEO at Connecticut Children’s. “We have made it easier than ever to schedule an appointment with our experts thanks to our comprehensive virtual health program, which includes video visits. We have been committed to creating dedicated resources and content for our patients and families so they have the latest information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and pediatric medical breakthroughs. We are truly providing next generation care for our next generation and are celebrating this more than ever during our 25th anniversary this year.”
