Connecticut Children’s Hospitalist Advances Inpatient Asthma Care Through Research Posted on February 13, 2018 Congratulations to Connecticut Children’s hospitalist Alex Hogan, MD, MS, whose asthma research was just published in the journal Hospital Pediatrics. During his fellowship at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Dr. Hogan’s quality improvement project helped providers improve the asthma controller therapy they prescribed to admitted patients at the time of discharge. He found that when children were admitted to the hospital, providers were good at giving the correct immediate treatments, but not as good at prescribing the correct long-term controller therapies. When properly prescribed and taken consistently, long-term controller therapies have been proven to decrease missed days of school, ER visits and hospitalizations. Asthma is the most common chronic pediatric condition affecting 7 million children in the U.S. and is one of the most common reasons for admission to Connecticut Children’s. Dr. Hogan will be using his experience improving the asthma care in the Bronx here in Hartford by working with the Inpatient Management and Pulmonary teams on improving our inpatient and outpatient clinical pathways for asthma.
