Connecticut Children’s Infusion Center is dedicated to providing a comfortable, family-friendly experience for infants, children and adolescents who require intravenous (IV) infusion therapy. Infusions can range from 30 minutes to eight hours, depending on the condition being treated, so our Infusion Center is designed with comfort and privacy in mind.

An Infusion Adventure

The Infusion Center features an immersive, playful experience throughout the Center’s three main treatment areas, each of which is designed to feel like an outdoor campsite.

Treatment areas include tent rooms with playful features like secret passageways for young patients to explore. Patients who desire a more social experience may enjoy our trailer-themed space, which features customizable lighting. Our “cabins” offer privacy and comfort for patients receiving longer infusions.

During treatment, patients and families can engage with a game-like technology experience, which guides children through treatment in a fun, interactive way. Patients can create a digital avatar—called a “pathfinder”—which is projected on digital displays throughout the treatment area, providing them with a sense of control and wonder.

What is Infusion Therapy?

Infusion is a method of administering drugs intravenously when they cannot be given either orally or by a shot (subcutaneous). The need for intravenous versus oral or subcutaneous therapy depends upon many factors that your doctor considers when outlining a treatment program. Some intravenous treatments may only need to be given once, and others may need to be given at regular intervals over a longer period of time.

At Connecticut Children’s, infusion therapy is administered to infants, children and adolescents who require intravenous therapy for a variety of acute and chronic illnesses, such as gastrointestinal disorders, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, infectious diseases, immune deficiencies and endocrinology disorders, to name a few. Our team of physicians, nurses, and medical assistants are very experienced in the use of these medications. Connecticut Children’s is among the leading pediatric centers pioneering the use of these therapies.
