Connecticut Children’s partners with Hartford Hospital to offer one of the leading pediatric kidney transplant programs in the U.S. For over 20 years, our providers have performed successful pediatric kidney transplants with some of the best clinical outcomes in the country. Our expert team understands the unique needs of pediatric patients and has experience performing transplants for toddlers through young adults.

There are two main reasons why a child or adolescent may require a kidney transplant: structural and congenital abnormalities, and kidney diseases. If a kidney transplant is determined to be the best option for your child, our specially-trained team will guide you every step of the way.

The Transplant Process

All pre- and post-transplant care is provided at Connecticut Children’s main campus in Hartford, while transplant surgeries are performed next door at Hartford Hospital.

We work with both living and deceased donor programs to identify a possible match for your child. A dedicated nurse coordinator will facilitate all care and support for your child throughout the process. Our goal is to provide personalized one-on-one care and the highest level of clinical excellence.

Dialysis for Children and Adolescents

Children and adolescents with renal disease often need dialysis on their path to kidney transplant. Connecticut Children’s is home to the first pediatric dialysis center in Connecticut.  The center features a child/adolescent-friendly environment and high-quality care provided by pediatric experts committed to the needs of young patients and their families. Available services include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and therapeutic apheresis, administered under the supervision of the pediatric specialists at Connecticut Children’s.

Specialized, Dedicated Providers

Kidney transplant patients are supported by a dedicated team specializing in pediatric care. The pediatric kidney transplant team is made up of pediatric transplant surgeons, pediatric nephrologists, pediatric nutritionists, social workers, and even financial counselors. A range of other pediatric specialists is available on campus should the need arise.
