Common Volleyball Injuries

Volleyball is a jumping, diving, and swinging sport. Due to its nature, volleyball can lead to injuries to the many different parts of the body. Volleyball can be played on the soft sand of beaches, or the hard surface of a gym floor.

Ankle sprains are the most common injury sustained. This often occurs from stepping on another player’s foot or from quick lateral change of direction. Overuse injuries are also common in the shoulder, low back and knee.

A good strength and conditioning program to stretch and strengthen the upper arms, low back and legs should be employed before and during the volleyball season. Proper protective equipment such as knee pads and ankle braces should also be worn to help prevent injuries.
