Electrophysiology Services at Connecticut Children’s The Electrophysiology Laboratory is Connecticut’s only congenital electrophysiology program, servicing pediatric and adult congenital heart disease patients. The program is headed by Shailendra Upadhyay, MD, CEPS, FHRS, who is the only pediatric electrophysiologist in Connecticut certified by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners. What is Electrophysiology? Electrophysiology is a test that measures the heart’s electrical activity by inserting catheters and wire electrodes through blood vessels that enter the heart. The test is used to diagnose irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia). Arrhythmia Disorder Management Arrhythmia conditions we treat include: Supraventricular tachycardia Wolff-Parkinson White (WPW) syndrome Atrial tachycardia/ectopic atrial tachycardia Atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation Ventricular tachycardia and ventricular premature beats Inherited arrhythmia disorders Unexplained syncope We offer inpatient management of heart rhythm disorders, exercise stress testing, and a dedicated pediatric pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) clinic led by a pediatric electrophysiologist and dedicated nurse. Electrophysiology Procedures Dr. Upadhyay and the electrophysiology team have expertise in: Catheter ablation of supra-ventricular tachycardia/ventricular tachycardia 3D mapping system to perform catheter ablation with little to no X-ray use Trans-esophageal electrophysiology studies Implantation of patient-activated loop monitors Implantation of cardiac pacemakers Implantation of ICD Cardio-pulmonary exercise stress testing Our Electrophysiology Team
