The Severe Asthma Clinic provides comprehensive, team-based care for children with severe asthma. Severe asthma is most serious form of asthma, where symptoms occur every day and often at night, limiting daily activities, and usually not responding to high doses of typical asthma medications. Patients with severe asthma are likely to have higher rates of emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and daily limitations due to breathing problems.
Severe asthma can have many negative impacts on children, including decreased school attendance, limited participation in physical activities, high healthcare utilization, and mental health challenges. Connecticut, in particular, has high rates of pediatric asthma affecting nearly 1 in 8 children. Research has shown that providing multidisciplinary care for children with severe asthma can improve health outcomes and reduce hospitalization and emergency room use.
Why Choose Us?
The Clinic takes a holistic approach when evaluating and treating each patient. We identify the environmental and socio-economic factors (such as housing insecurity, smoke exposure, indoor allergens) affecting each patient, and connect families with the resources they need to address these challenges. Additionally, we provide access to the latest medical treatments, including novel biologics. Beyond medical care, we serve as an educational resource for families and foster a supportive network for those navigating the complexities of managing childhood asthma. Together, we strive to empower families and improve quality of life.
We work in close collaboration with Gavin Schwarz, MD, and Hillary Hernandez-Trujillo, MD, at the Connecticut Asthma & Allergy Center to provide comprehensive care for those patients also struggling to manage their allergies.
Treatment Options
While patients with mild and moderate asthma typically use inhalers for treatments, patients with severe asthma may respond better to novel biologics, injectable medications that target specific immune pathways to reduce asthma & allergy responses. We look at each patient’s biomarkers to help select the appropriate medication. Additionally, we refer patients to various social services, programs, and other specialists if needed.
