If your child has a bone, joint, muscle, or sports injury, it can be hard to know where to go.

Take it from me, a sports medicine physician assistant.

Here at Connecticut Children's, our Orthopedics and Sports Medicine teams treat many of the same injuries in kids I see every day. I always tell parents the type of care depends on whether the injury is new, ongoing, or needs special care.

When can my child use Connecticut Children's walk-in or same-day care?

Walk-in and same-day care is for recent injuries.

If the injury happened in the last 10 days, we can see your child at any of our five Connecticut locations. We treat:

At these visits, I help give families quick access to our care team.

When should we schedule a Connecticut Children's Sports Medicine appointment?

Make an appointment with Connecticut Children's Sports Medicine for:

  • Ongoing sports pain
  • Overuse injuries
  • Concussion concerns and concussion evaluation
  • Physical therapy, if your care team recommends it
  • Return-to-play questions or clearance
  • Recurring knee, ankle, shoulder, or other joint problems
  • Injuries that have not improved

What if I am not sure whether my child needs Orthopedics or Sports Medicine?

That's okay. We can help you choose the right care for your child.

Connecticut Children's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine often treat the same injuries. Our teams work together to create a care plan that fits your child's needs.

When should my child go to the Emergency Department for an injury?

Walk-in orthopedic and sports medicine care is not right for every injury. If your child has an exposed bone, a severe visible injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or another serious emergency, go to the Emergency Department right away.

And I always take this part seriously: For a pediatric head injury or pediatric head trauma, go to the Emergency Department right away. A pediatric concussion may need a concussion evaluation or child concussion assessment. A child brain injury also needs immediate care.
